Amidst talk that one form or the other of cricket is losing popularity the Board of Control for Cricket in India have struck yet another mega deal.
The BCCI awarded the rights to all cricket played in India over the next four years to Nimbus Communications for a massive Rs 2000 crore. Nimbus Communications owns the television channels Neo Sports and Neo Cricket.
What this means is that the Board will receive Rs 31.5 crore for each match played, be it Test, One Day International or Twenty20.
Nimbus has been instructed to furnish a bank guarantee by January 15 as a part of Tuesday’s agreement.
The decision was taken by the marketing committee of the Board, which met in Mumbai on Tuesday. The powerful committee of the Board, headed by president Shashank Manohar met at the Bandra Kurla Complex after a gap of almost a year.
The BCCI, however, did not reveal who had won the broadcasting rights for the period from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2014.
Nimbus currently own rights to home games, having initially paid US$ 612 million for a four-year period, something that was renegotiated to US$ 549 million following a government directive that forced private broadcasters to share the feed for sporting events of national importance with Doordarshan.
The previous deal, which included 23 Tests and 55 One Day Internationals comes to an end with the forthcoming home series against South Africa early next year.
