Younus played on to Sri Lanka's Dilhara Fernando in the ninth over on the final day after leading Pakistan to safety in answer to the tourists' massive 644-7 declared.

Younus fell 24 short of Pakistan's highest Test score, 337, made by Hanif Mohammad against the West Indies at Barbados in 1958. West Indian Lara hit his world record against England at Antigua in 2004.

The dismissal left Pakistan on 596-6 in the first innings and contemplating a draw in their first Test in 14 months following a series of security problems.
