Amila Aponso

 Amila Aponso began his cricketing journey in Sri Lanka, where he was born in 1993. He developed his early skills at St. Sebastian's College in Moratuwa before playing professional domestic cricket for Ragama Cricket Club. His slow left-arm orthodox bowling quickly stood out due to his exceptional control and accuracy. A fantastic domestic season in 2015 where he picked up numerous wickets earned him a well-deserved spot in the national developmental squads.

He made his international ODI debut for Sri Lanka against Australia in 2016, putting up impressive performances that caught the attention of global commentators. He instantly turned heads by dismissing Aaron Finch in the first ODI as his maiden wicket. He also broke into the T20 squad in 2018 to play against Bangladesh. Overall, he managed to represent his country in nine ODIs and three T20Is, showcasing his ability to compete against some of the best international line-ups before deciding to take his career in a completely new direction.

Seeking fresh horizons, Aponso made a career-defining move to the United States in June 2021. He rapidly adapted to American conditions, becoming a premier choke-artist and frontline spin weapon in the Minor League Cricket (MiLC) landscape. Primarily anchoring the bowling attacks for the Atlanta Fire and Atlanta Lightning, his ability to dry up runs in the middle overs and squeeze out breakthroughs made him one of the most respected domestic assets in the country.

After dominating the Minor League Cricket he had a high-profile stint with the San Francisco Unicorns which kickstarted his MLC career. In 2024, he was drafted by the Washington Freedom for Major League Cricket. Operating in a star-studded squad under the elite stewardship of coach Ricky Ponting, Aponso served as a vital tactical asset, helping the Freedom lift the MLC Championship Title in 2024. Firmly retained by the franchise, he remains a central structural anchor for the Freedom across the 2025 and 2026 season.
