Ishant Sharma

Born on September 2, 1988, in Delhi, Ishant Sharma emerged as one of India's most durable and towering pace bowlers, using his 6-foot-4-inch frame to generate steep bounce and persistent movement off the seam. Making his Test debut against Bangladesh at Dhaka in May 2007, followed closely by his One-Day International debut against South Africa at Belfast in June 2007, he quickly established himself as a frontline option for the national side. His grand arrival on the international stage took place during the 2007-08 tour of Australia, where an unforgettable, relentless spell against Ricky Ponting at Perth showcased his ability to torment elite batters with high-arm bounce and unwavering length.

While initial career phases were marked by heavy workloads on flat subcontinental pitches, Ishant reinvented his wrist position and bowling action to become a lethal, highly disciplined workhorse in overseas conditions. His signature triumph came during the second Test at Lord's in July 2014, where he produced a heroic spell of short-pitched bowling, claiming career-best figures of 7 for 74 in the second innings to seal India's historic Test victory at the venue after 28 years. Across the second half of his career, his enhanced control and ability to move the ball late turned him into the senior leader of a formidable Indian fast-bowling unit that achieved dominant home records and historic series victories in Australia and England.

Across 105 Test matches, Ishant captured 311 wickets at an average of 32.40, including 11 five-wicket hauls, becoming only the third Indian fast bowler after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to break the 300-wicket barrier in red-ball cricket. In One-Day Internationals, he claimed 115 wickets in 80 matches at an average of 30.98, serving as a key strike bowler during India's winning campaign at the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

His versatility and stamina also extended to franchise cricket, where he accumulated over 90 wickets across multiple Indian Premier League seasons for teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals. In recognition of his long service and outstanding achievements in Indian cricket, Ishant was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2020.
