Javed Miandad

A master of combat tactics, improvisational strokeplay, and fierce competitive resolve, Javed Miandad stands as the quintessential big-match batsman in Asian cricket history. Born in Karachi, Sindh, the right-handed batting genius combined exceptionally quick footwork against spin with an uncanny ability to manipulate field placements through late dabs and nudges. Driven by an intense tactical instinct and an unyielding refusal to surrender, Miandad thrived in hostile environments, turning tense chases into psychological triumphs through relentless running between the wickets and unshakeable self-belief.

Miandad made an extraordinary entrance onto the international stage, scoring a century on his Test debut against New Zealand at Lahore in October 1976. In just his third Test match at Karachi, he carved out a brilliant 206 against the same opposition, becoming the youngest player in Test history to score a double century. Across an international career spanning six consecutive ICC Cricket World Cups from 1975 to 1996, he anchored Pakistan's batting unit through its most iconic eras, capping his World Cup legacy as the leading run-scorer for the championship-winning 1992 team.

Among his most legendary achievements, Miandad struck an iconic last-ball six off Chetan Sharma in the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup final at Sharjah, requiring four runs to win with one wicket remaining to secure a dramatic victory over India. As national captain across multiple stints, he led Pakistan with fierce pride, including a landmark Test series victory away in England in 1992. Across his domestic and overseas career, he represented Karachi, Habib Bank Limited, Sussex, and Glamorgan with distinction.

Following his retirement from playing after the 1996 World Cup, Miandad served as head coach of the Pakistan national team across three separate terms, guiding the side to major tournament triumphs and series wins. Inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, he remains a monumental icon of world cricket, revered for his combative spirit, street-smart genius, and unmatched big-match temperament.
