Martin Crowe

There was an elegance to Martin Crowe’s batting that made even the most demanding strokes look effortless. A technically gifted right-hander, Crowe combined a classical style with an ability to adapt to different conditions and attacks. He was also an inventive captain, willing to challenge convention and find new ways to give New Zealand an edge.

Crowe made his international debut against Australia in 1982 and took his first major steps towards becoming one of New Zealand’s leading batters. His finest years came in the early 1990s. In 1991, Crowe made 299 against Sri Lanka in Wellington, at the time the highest Test score by a New Zealander. A year later, he captained New Zealand to the semi-finals of the 1992 World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 456 runs. His innovative leadership became a defining feature of the campaign, with his use of Dipak Patel as an opening bowler and Mark Greatbatch as an aggressive opener helping New Zealand surprise opponents throughout the tournament.

Injuries eventually began to take their toll, and Crowe retired from international cricket in 1995 with 5,444 Test runs and 17 centuries. He later moved into commentary, writing and cricket administration, remaining closely involved with the game even after his playing days. Crowe was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2015, shortly before his death in 2016. In 2024, his legacy was further recognised when the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy was introduced for the New Zealand-England Test series.
