Age 62IndiaINDIA
Right Handed Batsman

Born on October 20, 1963, in Patiala, Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu established a unique batting identity defined by a drastic technical evolution from a methodical blockathon opener into a destructive lofter of spin bowling. Making his Test debut against the West Indies in November 1983 before earning his ODI debut during the 1987 World Cup, the right-handed opener developed a pronounced trigger movement against seam and a decisive step down the track against slow bowlers.

His tactical transformation earned him the popular nickname "Sixer Sidhu" for his rare ability to clear long boundary ropes with minimal follow-through effort. Across 51 Test matches, he amassed 3,202 runs at an average of 42.13, compiling 9 centuries and 15 fifties, headlined by an epic 201 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1997.

Sidhu's primary technical blueprint relied on immaculate spatial judgment against spin bowlers, using his long reach and quick footwork to neutralize turn before the ball pitched. This approach was famously demonstrated during the 1990s against world-class spinners, whom he repeatedly lofted over straight boundaries with clinical precision.

In One-Day Internationals, he scored 4,413 runs in 136 matches at an average of 37.08, compiling 6 centuries and 33 fifties, including a career-best 134 against England at Gwalior in 1993. His white-ball consistency was highlighted during the 1987 World Cup, where he was a prolific scorer, starting his white-ball career with four consecutive half-centuries.

Despite his reputation for aerial hitting, Sidhu possessed exceptional defensive discipline when match dynamics required prolonged occupation of the crease. His marathon 201 at Port of Spain spanned over 11 hours and 491 balls, showcasing an immense capacity for attritional endurance against a hostile Caribbean pace attack. Following his retirement from international cricket in 1999, he transitioned into sports broadcasting, where his energetic, aphoristic commentary style gained widespread public popularity.
