Richard Hadlee

Age 75New ZealandNEW ZEALAND
Left Handed All Rounder

New Zealand had produced plenty of promising cricketers, but it took Richard Hadlee to show that the country could produce a world-class fast bowler. A tireless right-arm seamer with remarkable control, movement and an insatiable appetite for wickets, Hadlee became New Zealand's first genuine world-class fast bowler. He was relentless with the new ball, dangerous with the old and capable of taking a game away from the opposition almost by himself.

Hadlee made his Test debut against Pakistan in Christchurch in 1973, but it did not take long for him to establish himself as the spearhead of New Zealand's attack. His greatest years came during the 1980s, when he developed into one of the most feared fast bowlers in world cricket. In 1985, he produced one of the finest individual performances in New Zealand's history, taking 15 wickets against Australia at Brisbane as New Zealand secured a famous victory.

Hadlee became the first bowler to reach 400 Test wickets in 1990, achieving the feat against India. His achievements were recognised when he was named New Zealand's Sportsperson of the Decade in 1987. He retired later in 1990 with 431 Test wickets, while his batting also added considerable value. He finished with two Test centuries and 15 fifties, underlining his ability as a genuine all-rounder.

Knighted in the same year that he retired, Hadlee left behind a legacy that went far beyond his numbers. In 2009, Hadlee was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, becoming the first New Zealand player to receive the honour. His legacy remains unmatched, having set the benchmark for fast bowling in New Zealand and inspired generations that followed.
