Highlights: Navdeep Saini’s fabulous penultimate over kept Royal Challengers Bangalore afloat as they beat Kings XI Punjab by 17 runs in an Indian Premier League encounter. AB de Villiers’ unbeaten 82 off 44 balls took RCB to a healthy 202 for 4 and things could have gone awry with young Nicholas Pooran (46 off 28 balls) hitting five sixes at the rear before Saini sealed it in the 19th over. Kings XI Punjab finished at 185 for 7 as RCB are now on eight points with three games left.

RCB 202/4 (AB de Villiers 82 off 44 balls, R Ashwin 1/15). KXIP 185/7 (Nicholas Pooran 46 off 28 balls, Umesh Yadav 3/33, Navdeep Saini 2/33).
Umesh Yadav started the over with a six but two back-to-back wickets meant that Kings XI Punjab fell short of the target by 17 runs. Another win for RCB and their play-off dreams remain alive!
3 runs off the penultimate over and two wickets on top of that! Nicholas Pooran mistimed the slog completely and it was once again AB De Villiers who completed a brilliant catch! KXIP 176/5
Navdeep Saini strikes for Royal Challengers Bangalore and David Miller is his victim. It was a flat hit from the Proteas and AB De Villiers completed a brilliant catch in the deep to dismiss his compatriot. KXIP 173/4
Nicholas Pooran went for another big shot but mistimed it completely and it looked like game over for the West Indies batsman. But Marcus Stoinis was unable to complete the catch and it can be the turning point of this match.
KXIP on top
Two sixes for Nicholas Pooran followed by two fours for David Miller. The duo have played brilliantly and with 38 runs needed off 21 balls, this is advantage KXIP at the moment! Tremendous batting by the youngster!
60 off 30 balls
Equation: 60 runs in 30 balls. Kings XI Punjab looked in trouble after losing the wicket of KL Rahul but considering the destructive force of David Miller and Nicholas Pooran, the visitors will surely be quite confident.
Pooran deals in sixes
Three sixes off Washington Sundar and Nicholas Pooran has announced his arrival in the IPL. The West Indies international showed pure power in his strokes and after 14 overs, Kings XI Punjab are 135/3.
Stat Attack: Moeen Ali
Ali dismisses Rahul for 42 (27)
Moeen Ali dismisses Rahul on his very first ball of his bowling.
Back to back dismissals against spinners for KL Rahul.
The last time he played at Bengaluru, he was also dismissed in the 40s; he had made 47 (30 balls) in 2018
KL Rahul comes down the ground and decides to take Moeen Ali on but he ended up gifting the ball to Tim Southee in front of the boundary line. This is a huge wicket and Kings XI Punjab are 105/3
Stat Attack: Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal depart for 35 (21), by Stoinis
His first 30+ score in his last 4 innings.
The 50-run partnership came up for KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal but Mayank was dismissed shortly after that as he ended up gifting his wicket to Marcus Stoinis. Kings XI Punjab 101 for the loss of two wickets.
117 runs needed to win off 12 overs - Kings XI Punjab will not be unhappy with the scenario considering they were chasing a huge total of 202. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are playing well at the moment and at the end of 8 overs, KXIP are 86 for the loss of just one wicket.
Stat Attack: Powerplay
Kings XI Punjab were 68 for the loss of one wicket after 6 overs.
This is now their highest powerplay score in this IPL.
It is also the 2nd highest by KXIP at Bengaluru (in the first 6 overs)
KL Rahul steady
A boundary straight down the ground followed by another one through the point region - KL Rahul is looking in tremendous form. Yuzvendra Chahal did not have any idea how to stop the runs from leaking and at the end of the Powerplay, Kings XI Punjab were 68 for the loss of one wicket.
Stat Attack: Chris Gayle
Gayle departs for 23 (10)
4th time Umesh Yadav has dismissed Gayle in the IPL
His first non 30+ score in his last 5 innings.
He now has no 30+ score in his last 6 IPL innings at Bengaluru.
Massive wicket for Royal Challengers Bangalore as Umesh Yadav dismisses Chris Gayle for 23. He started the over with a huge six but the next ball, he was unable to repeat it properly. The result was a miss hit and it was caught well at the boundary by AB De Villiers. KXIP 44/1
KXIP on fire
Chris Gayle and KL Rahul are off to a blinder against Royal Challengers Bangalore and this is exactly what they needed with 203 runs to chase. 13 runs off the over and KXIP are 36/0 after 3 overs.
9 runs from the 2nd over
A good comeback from Umesh Yadav after conceding 2 boundaries in the his firs two deliveries. He bowls four dot balls to KL Rahul. But KXIP won’t be bothered much, they have still got 9 runs from the over. KXIP 23/0 after 2 overs.
Gayle up and running
Chris Gayle is at it straightaway. He doesn’t mince words, hits Tim Southee for three fours in 4 balls. This is really going to be an interesting chase if Gayle sticks around till the powerplay. Just the beginning KXIP were looking for in their 203-run chase. 14 runs off the first over.
64 runs off the last three overs
64 runs off the last three overs - That can be the turning point in this match as RCB were on absolute fire! AB de Villiers now has scored the 3rd highest score by an RCB batsman in this IPL while the 100 run partnership between Stoinis/de Villiers was only the 2nd 100-run stand for RCB in this IPL.
RCB 202/4 in 20 overs
48 runs in the last two overs and Royal Challengers Bangalore have posted a big total of 202/4 in 20 overs. 6 1 4 6 4 6 - Hardus Viljoen had no idea what hit him as he was pummeled by Marcus Stoinis and AB De Villiers and this is looking like advantage RCB at the moment!
AB going great guns
Three consecutive sixes for AB De Villiers and this time is amazing batting by Mr 360. Two sixes straight down the ground and the last one was a one-handed smash that cleared the ground! RCB 175/4
Stat Attack: AB De Villiers
His 33rd in the IPL
His 5th in this IPL.
His 7th 50+ score vs KXIP, now the joint most for him against a single opponent in the IPL.
Fifty for AB
33rd IPL fifty for AB De Villiers and he followed it up with a humongous six off compatriot Hardus Viljoen. This has been a significant innings for RCB and after 17.3 overs, they are 149 for the loss of four wickets.
Stat Attack: Partnership
50 run partnership between Stoinis/de Villiers
This is the 9th 50+ run partnership for RCB in this IPL.
The first for the 5th wicket.
De Villiers in control
AB De Villiers took a cautious approach at the beginning but he has started to attack now and his victim is Murugan Ashwin. It was a short one from the spinner and he slammed it over midwicket for a six! RCB 133/4
AB on top
Ankit Rajpoot is brought back into the attack and AB De Villiers is looking to score a lot of runs in this over. A boundary followed by a six for the Proteas batsman as RCB are 122 for the loss of four wickets.
A six for Marcus Stoinis and that was the first boundary since the seventh over. With the score reading 109/4 in 14 overs, RCB will need to accelerate fast if they want to reach a big total.
Watch: Parthiv Storm
Stat Attack: RCB in trouble
RCB loses Akshdeep Nath for 3 (7 balls)
His 5th single digit dismissal in the IPL.
The last time he batted against KXIP, he was dismissed for a golden duck.
RCB now have lost 3 wickets in a span of 17 balls.
Hardus Viljoen strikes for KXIP and the new batsman to throw away his wicket is Akshdeep Nath. A slower one from the South Africa pacer and Nath managed to gift his wicket to him. Tough times for RCB and it looks like AB De Villiers is their only hope at this point! RCB 82/4
Stat Attack: Moeen Ali
Moeen Ali departs for 4 (5 balls)
3rd time dismissed for a single digit score in this IPL.
This is the first time he has batted against KXIP in the IPL.
RCB three down
A googly from Ravichandran Ashwin and the KXIP skipper has castled Moeen Ali. He is not a big fan of playing spinners and two quick wickets have brought KXIP right back into the match! RCB 77/3
Stat Attack: Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel dismissed by M Ashwin for 43 (24)
His 4th 30+ score in this IPL out of 11 innings.
Bac to back 40+ score for him.
1st time dismissed by M Ashwin in the IPL
Murugan Ashwin does the trick for Kings XI Punjab as Parthiv Patel misjudged the flight delivery and the ball flew off his top edge straight to skipper Ravichandran Ashwin. RCB 71/2
Parthiv on top
4,4,0,4,6,0 - What an over for Parthiv Patel! He took Mohammed Shami apart completely and RCB are 70/1 after 6 overs. This was the perfect end to the powerplay overs and RCB need to build on this solid foundation.
Rajpoot in trouble
4,3,6 - Ankit Rajpoot is becoming the favourite bowler for the RCB batsmen. AB De Villiers smashed him for a boundary and when Parthiv Patel got the chance, he was also able to score a maximum off the fast bowler. RCB 52/1
Stat Attack: Virat Kohli
Kohli dismissed on 13 (8) by Shami
3rd time dismissed by Shami in the IPL
This is now the joint 3rd most by a bowler in the IPL
Back-to-back no balls from Ankit Rajpoot but that did not amount to a lot of run for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The slower delivery worked well for the bowler as Parthiv Patel failed to score off the last two balls and on the very next over, Mohammed Shami takes the wicket of Virat Kohli. Kohli mistimed the shot and the catch was taken by Mandeep Singh. RCB 35/1
This is brilliant batting by Parthiv Patel. The wicket-keeper batsman is going great guns on one end and that has allowed Virat Kohli to play his natural game. This has been a great start for RCB as they are 32/0 in 2.2 overs
What a chance!
Virat Kohli flipped the first ball from Mohammed Shami off his pads and it went straight to Hardus Viljoen but the Proteas was unable to hold on to the catch. This was exactly what the India skipper needed as he followed it up with two consecutive boundaries. RCB 20/0
Parthiv on fire
Ankit Rajkoot was a bit wayward in his first over and Parthiv Patel took full advantage of it. First, e slammed the ball for a boundary through the point region and then, followed it up with another straight down the ground. RCB 8/0
“We will bowl first. We have two changes. Sam Curran sits out, Pooran comes in. And we have Harpreet Brar out, Ankit Rajpoot comes in. When we travel, we have to use the Indian seamers in the side. Virat said about enjoying the game, and we have to do the same. They are a star-studded side and it’s important to knock them over.”
Steyn misses out
Dale Steyn missed out due to a slight niggle and this can be bad news for Royal Challengers Bangalore. With Chris Gayle and KL Rahul opening for KXIP, they would wanted a strike bowler like Steyn to bother them early on. But, that will be a problem now and they will have to find another way to dismiss them.
“Last game also we lost the toss but we won. Looking for a solid performance tonight. No team wants to lose six games in a row. We aren’t thinking of play-offs. We are thinking of playing fearless cricket. Proud of the spirit the guys are playing with. Two changes for us. Steyn has a niggle, so Southee comes in. Negi sits out, Washington Sundar comes in.” - Virat Kohli.
KXIP Playing XI
Kings XI Punjab (Playing XI): Lokesh Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Nicholas Pooran(w), Ravichandran Ashwin(c), Hardus Viljoen, Murugan Ashwin, Ankit Rajpoot, Mohammed Shami
RCB Playing XI
Royal Challengers Bangalore (Playing XI): Parthiv Patel(w), Virat Kohli(c), AB de Villiers, Marcus Stoinis, Akshdeep Nath, Moeen Ali, Washington Sundar, Tim Southee, Navdeep Saini, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal
KXIP opt to field
Kings XI Punjab have won the toss and they have decided to field first against Royal Challengers Bangalore. No Dale Steyn for RCB as he was replaced by Tim Southee while Ankit Rajpoot comes in for Harpreet Brar.
There are some cracks with even grass covering and Brendon McCullum reckons that the ball would come on nicely and it could be a batting friendly pitch.
RCB might draw some inspiration from their match-winning knocks of an unbeaten 59 by de Villiers and 67 by Kohli, against Punjab when they met in the first leg.
However, their bowling remains a worry despite the arrival of Dale Steyn. RCB’s bowling was exposed once again in the last match here when Dhoni almost pulled off the impossible chasing 162, needing 26 runs off the last over bowled by Umesh Yadav.
Player Battle: Gayle vs Tye
AB de Villiers has been in good for RCB this season. He has scored 332 runs this season in 9 matches and once the the onus will be on him and Kohli to carry the load of the RCB batting. But he might face a tough challenge from Andre Tye, who has very good record against AB. In the 21 balls that Tye has bowled to de Villiers, he has given away only 23 runs and has only managed to get him out once.
Player Battle: Kohli vs Ashwin
Virat Kohli has faced almost 20 overs of R Ashwin in IPL and he hasn’t got out to him even once, how’s that for a stat? But the captain vs captain duel between Ashwin and Kohli has all the makings of being a fascinating contest. The numbers are heavily in favour of the RCB captain but one should never count Ashwin out, ask Jos Buttler and he will tell you.
Moeen Ali confident
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Moeen Ali showed confidence in his game and said he too can score runs like RCB skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.
“I think it gives a lot of confidence if Virat and AB don’t score, or if one of them doesn’t play like AB didn’t against KKR, we could still score 200-plus. I have the confidence in my own game and believe that I can also score runs just as quickly as them and take games away from the opposition. It won’t always happen but I know I can do that,” ESPN Cricinfo quoted Ali as saying.
Chahal on RCB connection
“It’s like a family to me, when I came here in 2014 I never thought that I’ll play for this franchise. I really enjoy when I come to Bengaluru and I only want to play for RCB in the IPL throughout my life,” Yuzvendra Chahal told ANI.
RCB would be the more confident side going into the match, having beaten the KXIP the last time these two teams met at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on April 13.
6: Umesh Yadav needs 6 more wickets to compete 150 T20 wickets.
• 4: Yuzvendra Chahal needs 4 more wickets to reach 100 wickets for RCB in IPL.
• 9: AB de Villiers is 9 sixes away from hitting 200 sixes for RCB.
o He will be only the second batsman to hit 200 sixes for RCB. Gayle (239 sixes) is the only player to hit 200+ sixes for RCB.
• 13 runs: KL Rahul needs 13 runs to complete 3000 runs in T20s.
• 59: Mandeep Singh is 59 runs away from competing 3000 T20 runs.
• 1: Sam Curran needs 1 more wicket to complete 50 T20 wickets.
• 26: Umesh Yadav is the joint highest wicket taker against KXIP in IPL.
o Sunil Narine is the other bowler with 26 wickets against KXIP.
• 3/6: 3 out of the 6 centuries scored against KXIP are by Bengaluru batsmen.
• 23.19: Andrew Tye has the 4th best bowling average for Kings XI Punjab in IPL. (min 250 balls)
• 16.60: Andrew Tye has the best bowling average for Kings XI Punjab in IPL. (min 250 balls)
Trouble for KXIP
KXIP, on the other hand, lost their previous game against the Delhi Capitals at the Feroz Shah Kotla in the national capital.
Apart from KL Rahul and Chris Gayle, their batsmen have not been performing -- a worrying sign for the Punjab-based franchise who are at the fifth position in the points table. Their bowling has also been not great with bowlers leaking runs and not picking up wickets at crucial junctures of the game.
The Chris Gayle Factor
Chris Gayle is one of the highest run getters at Bengaluru and only one of 3 players to score 1000 or more runs at Bengaluru in IPL. He has scored 10 fifties and 3 centuries at the Chinnaswamy stadium in T20s, most at a venue in T20s as well as most for him in IPL.The current highest score in the IPL is an unbeaten 175* came at Bengaluru and it was scored by none other than Chris Gayle against Pune Warriors India in 2013. He also has a Strike Rate of 159.21, which is his 5th highest at an Indian venue in IPL.
RCB would take a lot of confidence from their last victory against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) which they registered despite heroics from MS Dhoni in a nail-biting clash.
Hello and welcome
Welcome to the live coverage of the IPL 2019 encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab. Virat Kohli & Co started the tournament on an extremely disappointing note but they have fought back well and with back-to-back wins over Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, they have kept their hopes of reaching the play-offs alive. On the other hand, KXIP lost their last match against Delhi Capitals and they are currently in the fifth position.
