Trouble in Calypso land as three West Indies players decline contracts

West Indies cricket continues to be in turmoil. Three top cricketers – Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite – have refused to accept central contracts offered by their cricket board.

Money matters have continued to plague West Indies cricket. It has resulted in depleted Caribbean teams in recent years. Fights over wages have left players with a bitter taste in their mouths.

Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Brathwaite have sided with the West Indies Cricket Board in recent times. Bravo and Samuels have been batting pillars for West Indies while Brathwaite’s limited overs skills were exposed in the World T20 earlier this year in India.

The troika has declined a central contract for the period 2016-17. These contracts are only given to Test players. On current form, Bravo’s refusal is the biggest blow.

In the UAE, West Indies recently lost a Test series against Pakistan 2-1. Bravo had scored a century in the first Test in Dubai which Pakistan won by 56 runs.
