Harshal Patel, 21, ripped through the batting by bowling in the corridor with remarkable consistency and allowing the pitch to do a bit. Four of the top five batsmen fell as they failed to judge their off-stump. Robin Uthappa paid the price for not moving his feet.

“My idea was to bowl a consistent line and length. There was some movement but I think the wicket was on the batting side,” Patel said. Patel's parents are settled in Newark, USA but he opted to try his luck in India.

Brief scores: Karnataka 151 (R Uthappa 35, H Patel 8/40); Haryana 120/0 (R Dewan batting 63, N Saini batting 55).
