Work at five locations on the All Weather Road between Chamba and Dharasu has been stopped since Monday, after officials of the Tehri forest division sent a notice to the Border Roads Organisation that environmental norms were being flouted by the construction companies.
Koko Rose, divisional forest officer of Tehri who sent the notice to officials at Border Road Organisation informed that construction work was underway at the locations without safety structures being erected that would stop muck from dropping into the Tehri Lake.
“As per norms set by the National Green Tribunal, before undertaking construction work, safety walls have to be built which stops debris from falling into the water body, preventing any kind of damage in future. Here, these safety walls had not been constructed, which is why we sent a notice and immediately got the work stopped,” said Rose. He added that muck was not being discharged into the water body at present, but it was also not being dumped at the specified area.
With the notice, work will be affected between Chamba and Kandisaur on the Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway, where BRO was working for widening of the roads. Construction work has been stopped at Ramgarh, Kamand, Ratnogad and Dhikyara regions on the stretch. The construction company working in these areas has now been asked to built the wall first and then only work will resume.
Divisional forest officer of Tehri also informed that if the wall is not built at the earliest and if again other NGT norms for the road are violated then, the forest department would take up the matter legally.
Col. Yash Srivastava, the BRO official from Uttarkashi, who is in-charge for the stretch where work has been stopped, could not be reached for a comment on the notice and further legal steps by the forest department, till the filing of the report.
