Delhi Jal Board launches data acquisition centre as part of its water audit system

This data centre, along with more than 3,000 water flow meters to be installed over the next five years at various levels of the system, would help DJB to better manage supply and reduce wastage of water in summer.

The DJB’s water supply network, which supplies around 900 million gallons per day (MGD), comprises 10 water treatment plants (WTPs), 120 primary reservoirs, 192 tappings and more than 600 secondary reservoirs.

“But despite this huge network, we didn’t have data to check which areas were water-starved and where was water being wasted. This system would help us to audit the water supply, right from the WTP till the time it reaches consumers. We would be able to identify which areas are receiving how much water, the water-starved regions and where water is being wasted. Accordingly, excess water from some areas could be diverted to water-scarce regions,” said Dinesh Mohaniya, vice chairman of DJB.

“This is one of the biggest water-audit project systems in the world through which real-time data of more than 3,000 water flow meters would be available. Engineers would be able to remotely control the supply in future and improve the efficiency of the distribution network,” Mohaniya said.

While Delhi needs around 1,100 MGD water, DJB supplies around 900 MGD. Delhi f aces an acute water scarcity in summer.
