Delhi Oyo room suicide by teens: Parents say ‘did not know they were friends’

The parents of the two teenagers, who allegedly committed suicide in an OYO room in Dwarka on Friday, have told the police that they did not know about their friendship. The police are yet to find out why the two committed suicide.

“We had no idea they were friends. We do not know why they took their lives,” the parents of the two teenagers who took their lives in an OYO room in south west Delhi have reportedly told Delhi police.

A day after a teenage couple was found hanging from the ceiling fan in a Dwarka hotel, police said they are yet to find out why the two committed suicide.

DCP south west Surender Kumar who is supervising the investigation said the families of the two are in shock. “The girl’s parents told us that they had no idea about her friendship with the boy. Similarly, the boy’s parents said that they had never heard of the girl.”

Police earlier suspected the couple may have committed suicide because of their families resisting their relationship. The young girl, who had recently turned 18 was a first year medical student while the boy, aged 17 was preparing for his IIT entrance examination. The two had booked the room using the Oyo app on Thursday.

“The boy’s parents said that he had never mentioned that wanted to marry or about his relationship. They said he was very ambitious and wished to crack the IIT and was always engrossed in his books,” a police officer said.

Investigating officials said they would now friends of the teenagers to get a breakthrough in the case. Police will also check their cell phone conversations and message.

“Since the parents do not have any clue, we will now question their friends. We might get some leads from their friends who must be aware of their friendship and other problems. For now the parents have asked us to conduct the post-mortem and hand over the bodies to them for cremation,” a police officer said.

The teenagers had checked in an OYO room in Dwarka sector 17 on Thursday and were found hanging in their room from the same fan on Friday evening. When they did not come out of the room till 1 pm, on Friday afternoon, the OYO rooms staff went and knocked at their door. No one however responded.

When they did not come out till 4pm the staff informed their manager who in turn called the police. A police team then reached the spot and broke open the door to find the couple hanging from the same fan. Their bodies were then brought down and their parents were informed.

The two used the hotel bed sheets to hang themselves. While the girl’s father is a CRPF radio operator, the boy’s father runs a grocery store.
