Man kills neighbour with ice pick inside Delhi police station, 2 cops suspended

Vishal a 32-year-old man allegedly fell out with his neighbour Anil after the latter refused to serve him alcohol on his daughter’s birthday. Following a scuffle, the two landed in a south Delhi police station where Vishal allegedly stabbed Anil to death inside the IO’s office.

A 34-year-old driver was allegedly stabbed to death with an ice pick by his neighbour in south-east Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar police station early on Tuesday.

Anil Kumar’s wife accused police of ignoring her concerns about her husband’s safety and demanded stern action against station personnel.

Within hours, a sub-inspector, who had questioned the two men, and a constable were suspended and the police station in-charge sent to district lines.

“An inquiry has been launched and its findings will come out in the next 48 hours,” deputy commissioner of police (south-east) Romil Baaniya said.

The quarrel started on Monday night when Anil was seeing off guests who had come for his daughter’s birthday party at their Dakshinpuri home.

Vishal, 22, who lived a few houses down the lane, walked up to Anil and asked for alcohol as birthday treat, Baaniya said. On being refused, he abused Anil and the two started scuffling.

“Anil was seeing off my mother and father when Vishal attacked him with a rod. I stepped in and was injured,” wife Lovely told the Hindustan Times on Tuesday. She said Vishal was drunk.

The constable, too, was called by a senior and on his return he saw Vishal stabbing Anil with an ice pick, which is widely used in police stations across Delhi to punch holes in papers and files.

Kumar and another policeman pulled away Vishal and rushed Anil to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, but he was declared dead.

Anil was stabbed six times, in the neck, chest and the back. Vishal, who is an office boy in a private firm, was arrested on charges of murder.

Lovely was sitting in the reception area of the police station when Anil was attacked. “I was worried about Anil’s safety,” she said.

When she saw Prakash leaving the room, she told him not to leave Anil alone with Vishal. “Few minutes later, my husband came out of the room. He was drenched in blood and policemen were holding him,” she said.
