The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the health ministry’s proposal to upgrade 148 state government medical colleges by increasing seats and disciplines in post-graduate course.

The nod means 5,000 more seats in PG courses, taking the number to 18,000.
The colleges will get a one-time grant of Rs 1,350 crore under a new centrally-sponsored scheme under which 75 per cent of the cost will be borne by the Centre and rest by the state government.
The release of funds will be conditional to states committing to incur necessary recurring expenditure for creating and maintaining the facilities.
