The standing committee on Thursday passed a resolution to construct the building at the CBD ground, Karkardooma.

The cor poration procured the site from the Delhi Development Authority one-and-a-half years ago for Rs 32 crore.

A part of the building will be leased out to generate revenue.

Standing committee chairman Jitender Chaudhary instructed the engineering department to constitute a ‘special committee’ to explore various loan options.

“Although we had the option of constructing the EDMC headquarters on the public private partnership (PPP) model, that makes it difficult for us to lease/rent out a portion of the building for generating revenue,” Chaudhary said.

“As soon as we get a loan, we will start work on the project,” he added.

There is no confirmation about when the project will be complete.

Earlier, East Delhi Municipal Corporation commissioner Mohanjeet Singh had tabled a proposal in the standing committee regarding shifting of the headquarters to the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre.

But the standing committee members said the shifting of the office will inconvenience visitors.

“It would be really difficult for residents to go all the way to the civic centre for meeting officials, said Mahendra Ahuja, deputy chairman, standing committee, East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Also, shifting the headquarters will slow down the process of development as there won’t be any direct supervision of senior officials,” he added.

“There is no proper security check here and visitors can access the commissioner’s or mayor’s office easily.”

“Therefore, it is important to construct a separate headquarters for EDMC,” Ahuja said.
