Battle of vote share: AAP gets huge Cong slice; BJP maintains segment

Behind the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) crushing defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the election for the Delhi assembly on Tuesday lies an interesting tale of vote shares – the saffron party fell by the wayside despite getting roughly the same number of votes.

Behind the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) crushing defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the election for the Delhi assembly on Tuesday lies an interesting tale of vote shares – the saffron party fell by the wayside despite getting roughly the same number of votes.

A comparison of the vote shares of the three main parties shows the AAP’s gain was clearly at the expense of the Congress, other smaller parties and independent candidates.

The Congress secured 24.7% of the vote share in the 2013 polls to the Delhi assembly but the figure this time fell to a mere 9.7%. On the other hand, the AAP’s vote share rose from 29.7% in 2013 to 54.3% this year.

The BJP’s vote share fell only marginally from 33.3% in 2013 to 32.2% this year, according to the Election Commission’s final figures. In other words, the BJP more or less managed to maintain its vote share but was done in by the voters who swung from the Congress to the AAP.

The results smashed the aura of invincibility since he swept to power in the 2014 general election.



The Congress, the BJP's main nationwide challenger, failed to win even a single seat while the BJP slumped to three seats.
