An interim report filed by the CBI, which is probing the alleged misappropriation of varsity funds by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Prof Abdul Azis, reveals that the vice-chancellor “committed financial impropriety”.
The agency, which was asked by the HRD ministry to probe the case in June 2011, charged him with irregularities and extension of undue favour to self. Azis, who is facing over 40 allegations over financial claims and administrative decisions, will step down as V-C next week.
Allegations probed by the agency include sanction of R93,053 under home travel concession for his family, I-T payment for 2007-08 from the varsity funds under the head of Accounts “Recoveries of Salary”, launch of four entrance test centres, unrequited constructions on the campus, purchase of luxury cars etc. On the administrative side, he is facing allegations of being on leave without sanction, superseding of executive council decisions, harassment of alumni etc.
