The police, who described the circumstances of Reingamphi Awungshi’s death on May 29 at her room in Chirag Dilli as “mysterious”, had registered a case of abetment to suicide. This was despite her family’s insistence that the death was fishy.

“Why are police officers not interrogating the suspects? We have already told them that she was being harassed by the landlord’s brother-in-law,” said Bosco Awungshi, her cousin, adding that she had confided in her friend about the sexual advances made by the man.

Bloodstains had also been found on her bedsheet. Police had revealed that a male friend had visited her a day before the incident.

The family claimed there was ample proof for the case to be registered under the appropriate sections for murder and culpable homicide.

“We are deeply hurt by the attitude of the police,” Awungshi added. “All we want is that the post-mortem report should be not be tampered with and the investigation should be done in a fair manner.”

The Delhi Police, now cornered, transferred investigation to the crime branch.

“Why does it take 400 people protesting outside a police station to file a simple FIR,” a protester asked.
