DUAC exhibition to put Delhi on display

The Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) will organise a grand exhibition 'Mapping Delhi' to highlight the multiple dimensions of the city during the Commonwealth Games.

Did you know there was a full-fledged industry in Shahjahanabad manufacturing every thing from textiles, metal products to zardozi work? Or, were you aware that Delhi also had palaeolithic and neolithic sites?

The Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) will organise a grand exhibition 'Mapping Delhi' to highlight the multiple dimensions of the city during the Commonwealth Games.

A collage of drawings, photographs and replicas of certain areas and even interactive media models are going to be part of the month-long exhibition that would start a week before the Games and continue till a week after it.

Though the exhibition would cover various aspects of the city — history, crafts, political, geographical and even environmental — over a period of time, the emphasis will be on contemporary Delhi.

“Our aim is to bring out the real characteristic of the city so that people develop a sense of respect and affection for the city,” said DUAC chairperson K.T. Ravindran.

DUAC member professor M. Shaheer is looking after environmental issues, landscapes and water bodies; professor Nayanjyot Lahiri is looking after its ancient history part and Ratish Nanda is taking care

of the heritage and medieval history.

The Ministry of Urban Development has funded the exhibition. The DUAC, helped by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Delhi Development Authority, Central Public works Department, the Delhi government and the National Archives, has spent almost eight months on the research for the exhibition.
