NEW DELHI: A Grade IV employee of East Delhi Municipal Corporation allegedly committed suicide at his house in east Delhi’s GTB Enclave on Tuesday due to financial hardships aggravated by delay in payment of salary, police said.

Hridesh Sharma, 45, who worked as an attendant in an East Delhi Municipal Corporation school in Nand Nagri, hanged himself from a ceiling fan of his house. His body was found on Tuesday morning.

Zulfikar Khan of the East Delhi Class IV Employees Union said Sharma had been facing a financial crunch as the east corporation employees haven’t received salary in the last two months. “Because of some technical glitch, Sharma hadn’t received his salary for three months. He was an active member and had shared his problems with us. I didn’t think that he would take such an extreme step,” Khan said.

EDMC officials, too, said that Sharma was facing financial problems. They, however, claimed that late payment of salary was not the only reason behind Sharma’s suicide.

AK Singla, deputy commissioner of police (northeast), said no suicide note had been recovered. “Sharma’s family has claimed that he was depressed. A probe is on,” he said.
