To prevent any untoward incidents this Diwali, the Delhi fire services department has come out with a list 12 localities that are most vulnerable to fire accidents.

The department has also issued a list of preventive guidelines for Delhiites. Last year, 169 fire incidents were reported on Diwali. To prevent any such situation this Diwali, the fire department has geared up for any eventuality.

“The areas have been identified on the basis of crowds they draw during Diwali season and their distance from the nearest fire station. Fire tenders will be stationed at these spots,” said AK Sharma, chief, Delhi fire services department.

Industrial areas and wholesale markets are also on this list. "Special arrangements have been made in crowded wholesale firecracker markets like Jama Masjid and Sadar bazaar. Keeping small fire-fighting equipment like fire extinguishers have been made mandatory for cracker vendors and we have also instructed them to put no-smoking boards outside their shops," added Sharma.

Officials are conducting random checks on firecracker vendors across the city to ensure crackers are in accordance with the permissible decibel norms — 125 dB.

During the Diwali week, 1,000 fire-fighters, 150 fire-tenders along with 10 motorcycles will be on the call across the Capital. "We are also making the general public more aware about the fire safety. We are regularly holding workshops along with the disaster management authority in schools, colleges and office," added Sharma.
