"Nitin Gadkari's stint as BJP chief has begun with the defeat of his party in his home district Nagpur. When his name was first announced for the post, Congress had wrested the Nagpur Zila Parishad seat from BJP on December 4.

"Now with Gadkari actually becoming President of his party, Congress won even the council seat from his home district today," AICC Secretary in-charge for Maharashtra Mohan Prakash said.

He made the remark while commenting on the Congress performance in elections for the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the local self-government bodies constituency, whose results were declared today.

In Nagpur, Congress candidate Rajendra Mulak defeated sitting BJP MLC Ashok Mankar by four votes. Congress candidate Bhai Jagtap was declared elected from Mumbai.

"Congress won four of the five seats it contested. It wrested two seats from the BJP. Results show people have reaffirmed their faith in policy and programmes of Congress once again after the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections in the state earlier," he said.
