Pre-monsoon showers have been lashing Delhi since Thursday evening. On Friday evening, the city received 16 mm of rain. Showers are also expected on Saturday.

Between Thursday evening and Friday morning, the city received 13 mm of rain. On Friday the maximum temperature was recorded at 36.6°C, normal for this time of the year.

The minimum temperature was 27.2°C, a degree below normal.

The humidity, however, was punishing at a maximum of 98%. On Saturday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 30°C and 23°C.

The monsoons — which are a wind system — normally reach the city around June 29 each year. This year, it has been delayed.

“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon in some more parts of East Rajasthan, remaining parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and most parts of Punjab and Haryana, entire Chandigarh & Delhi and some parts of West Rajasthan during next 48 hours,” a statement issued by the India Meteorological Department said on Friday evening.

According to the long-range forecast, rains this monsoon season will be above the normal range. North-western India, which includes Delhi are expected to get good rains after two years.

June, however, has ended with a rain deficit which is expected to be made up in July and August.
