Stinking dead animal carcasses no longer pester Delhiites, asserts the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) with the opening of a rendering plant at Ghazipur. The site which was lying unused since 2004 has become operational and it brings in dead animals found on the roads and processes them into bird feed which is then sold in the markets.

MCD commissioner KS Mehra said the plant has been built at a cost of Rs 26 crore and the problem of disposing of animal carcasses has been sorted out. “It is used to recycle dead animals and slaughterhouse waste and is beneficial in removing health hazards arising out of the rotting carcass,” he said.

MCD had built the plant in 2004 but they were unable to find an operator to run the plant. However, recently they found an operator who is now paying MCD R5 lakh a month for the plant. The operator is responsible for collecting the dead carcasses from the roads of Delhi and according to Mehra, due to its economic viability; carcasses are being picked up more efficiently.

The rendering plant was lying unused all this while despite tenders being called six times since April 2006. The last firm to whom the civic body decided to hand over the plant in October 2009 never took up the challenge and refused to run the unit even on a trial basis.
