Pioneering work in earthquake-related events has won Jadavpur University professor Nibir Mandal the prestigious GD Birla Award for scientific research.

The award, given by the KK Birla Foundation for scientists below 50 years, carries a prize money of Rs. 1.50 lakh.
“Mandal’s work deals with mainly theoretical and experimental aspects of structural geology and tectonics. He enunciated a theory of particle motion associated with faults undergoing both translational and rotational movement,” the foundation’s statement said.
The Birla Award’s eminent jury employs a rigorous selection process and seeks to promote scientific acumen among relatively younger scientists. The selection board is headed by the president of the Indian National Science Academy.
