Over 50,000 people from across Delhi alone have confirmed that they will volunteer for the India Against Corruption campaign, organisers claimed on Tuesday.

Social activist Anna Hazare had embarked on a fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar on April 5 demanding civil society’s participation in drafting a stringent anti-corruption bill.

Hazare broke his fast on April 9 after the Centre issued a notification for a joint drafting committee to draft the bill.

During the week Hazare was on fast, the organiser had extensively made use of technology to spread the word, which had evoked spontaneous responses from people from all walks of life.

Continuing the same strategy, the organisers sent out an SMS to 3,50,000 people in Delhi on Saturday asking, “Do you want to volunteer for Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption (in support of strong anti corruption law)?”

Some of the civil society members from the joint drafting committee have drawn flak on different issues even when the government has held only one meeting of the committee. The march planned on May 1 is expected to showcase the people’s support to the joint drafting committee.

“The march on May 1 will commence at 5pm from Jantar Mantar,” a press release said.
