Ramjas row: Delhi University students move high court against policemen

The PIL seeks formation of an independent committee of senior Delhi Police officials to investigate what led to massive protests in Delhi University last week.

The Delhi high court is likely to take up the plea filed by students of Delhi University’s Law Faculty against police in Ramjas row on Thursday.

Students from DU’s law department on Wednesday approached the HC for action against policemen who allegedly assaulted students and journalists at Delhi’s Ramjas college during a protest.

Two of Delhi University law students Tarun Narang and Deepak Joshi have filed a public interest litigation. The PIL seeks formation of an independent committee of senior Delhi Police officials to investigate what led to the massive protests in Delhi University last week.

It also demanded that police lodge cases under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (assaulting a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) against the police officers.

On February 22, a literary festival organised in Ramjas College was disrupted, allegedly by members of the ABVP, which led to outbreak of clashes the next day in which teachers, students and journalists were wounded on the Delhi University campus.

Following the clashes, protests and counter-protests have been carried out by students of DU and ABVP respectively in Delhi University’s North Campus.
