A 30-year-old bar manager was arrested for murdering his roommate following a scuffle during new year celebrations at their room in Mahipalpur in south Delhi, police said on Sunday.

Residents found the victim’s body, with the face disfigured, some 500 metres away from the room where he and the accused had fought on January 1.

They then informed the police control room.

However, the identity of the deceased was established only on January 5 after the victim’s brother reported him as missing. He was identified as Ravinder (25).

The arrested manager, identified as Mandeep Singh (30), was sharing a rented room for the past two years with victim Ravinder’s cousin Surender (28), who works as a manager at a chocolate shop in IGI Airport.

Ravinder was living with them for the past six months, but was paying neither the rent nor the food expenses, said police.

Mandeep was arrested on Saturday by a team led by SHO Virender Jain under the supervision of ACP KP Kukrety.

Upon interrogation, Mandeep revealed that on the day of the murder he had a heated argument with Ravinder.

“Their argument soon turned into a fight and they both arrived in lane number 10 which was almost 500 metres away from their rented room in lane number 9. During the scuffle, Mandeep picked up a brick and attacked Ravinder on his dead due to which he collapsed on the ground. Mandeep became scared and to avoid his arrest, he disfigured Ravinder’s face beyond identification,” said Prem Nath, DCP (south).

He then returned to his room and asked a passerby to lock the door from outside on the pretext that his friends were coming there for New Year celebrations, while he wanted to rest.

“Mandeep initially pleaded innocence and claimed that his landlord unlocked the door (for him) around noon. It was his attempt to support his claims that he was in his room during the commission of crime,” said Prem Nath.

Mandeep , a B Com graduate, also underwent training in Aviation Hospitality and Tourism Management.
