Political career: Politics is in our blood and it was very natural for me to join active politics,” Kumar said. His sister Shakuntala Bhagwaria is an MLA in Haryana and was a minister in 1977. Kumar joined politics in 1984 and has been the vice president of Zila and also Pradesh Congress Committee. He has contested and won in both the 1998 and 2003 Delhi assembly elections. He is the Chairman of the Welfare of SC/ST/OBCs Committee. He has built the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and Valmiki School in his constituency and has worked to improve supply of potable water.
Family: Wife Meena is a homemaker. They have a son and a daughter.
