Two suicides ahead of Odisha Class 12 science result. One student passes, other fails

In a tragic turn of events, Rajesh Kumar Panda of Ganjam district, who had immolated himself fearing failure in Class 12 science examination, passed with 50% marks. Another student, Anurag Sethi from Cuttack, who had hung himself a day before the result, failed.

In a cruel turn of events, the parents of a student who had immolated himself three days ago fearing failure in Class 12 science examination, discovered that he had actually passed when the results were declared on Saturday.

Rajesh Kumar Panda, who studied at a private college in Berhampur town of Ganjam district, had failed twice earlier. On Thursday evening, while his parents were at a nearby market, Rajesh set himself on fire after pouring kerosene over his body. By the time his parents got home, Rajesh was charred to death.

But when the Class 12 science exam results were declared by the Council for Higher Secondary Education on Saturday morning, more shocks was in store for his distraught parents when it was revealed that Rajesh had cleared the exam with more than 50% marks.

“May be, he was under stress for results since he had failed the examination twice. He took a hasty step,” rued his mother Rita.

Anurag’s father, Abhay Kumar Sethi, who works as an assistant statistical officer in the District Planning and Monitoring department said he had gone to his son’s room to fetch his towel when he saw Anurag hanging. The boy had come home to Rayagada after appearing for his exam in March this year.

When the results were declared, Anurag was found to have failed the exam.

This year, over 95,000 students had appeared for the science exam, of which 77.98% passed.

The results of Class 12 arts and commerce examinations will be declared by the end of this month.
