The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission on Tuesday cancelled the Provincial Civil Services (Mains) 2017 examination for the day, scheduled to be held in two shifts after invigilators distributed the wrong set of question papers at one of the centres in Allahabad, a senior official said.
“The date of conducting the cancelled exams would be announced later. Rest of the exams would take place as per pre-announced schedule,” the commission’s secretary Jagdish said.
Invigilators at the Government Inter College distributed the question paper for essay writing instead of General Hindi in the first shift on the second day of PCS (Mains) 2017 exam in the morning. The essay exam was to be held in the second shift.
The candidates claimed that when they pointed out the mistake to the invigilators, some of them tried to force them to answer the essay question paper.
Upset candidates staged a protest and shouted slogans against the officials. They then marched to the residence of the commission’s chairperson and also assembled at UPPSC gates in protest. Policemen used mild force to disperse them.

For the exam, to continue till July 7, 13,664 aspirants applied out of which 12,281 or 89.88% appeared on the first day in the compulsory subject.

{{/usCountry}}The exam has been marred by controversy since the beginning. The advertisement for the vacancies was published in December 2016 and the last date for filling up of forms was January 22, 2017.
Due to a change of guard in the state, the government accepted the demand for two extra chances to students affected by the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT for appearing in the exam.
The forms were filled again for the same exam in April and May 2017, preliminary examination of which was scheduled to be held on March 19 that year, but it was postponed due to unavoidable reasons to September 24.
The result of the preliminary exam was declared on January 19, 2018, but 197 examinees approached the Allahabad high court over incorrect questions. The high court on March 29, 2018, ordered the commission to change the answers to the three questions and declare the result.
The commission then moved the Supreme Court which stayed the high court’s order. The date for the commencement of mains exam, which was first announced as March 17, 2018, was shifted to May 17 and later to June 18, 2018.
