Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, 57, contested the first assembly election from the Chachiyot constituency of Mandi on a BJP ticket in 1993 at the age of 28 but lost. He was fielded again in 1998 and since then he has won five times. In 2007, post delimitation the seat was renamed Seraj. In 2017, Thakur won the election by upstaging Congress's Chet Ram by a margin of 11,254 votes.Seraj constituency is one of the remote assembly segments of the state's second biggest district but Thakur gave a push to development in his assembly segment. Developing Janjehli for tourists is the dream project of the CM. Thakur, in the last five years, ensured to undertake every bit of development in the areas he set up a sub-divisional magistrate office in Bali Chowki, a bio-diversity park in Jhanjeli. Thakur often faced criticism both within and outside his party of lopsided development in his assembly segment.
