It was a close contest with Bharatiya Janata Party's V. Hangkhanlian winning the election upstaging National People's Party's Phungzathang Tonsing by a margin of just 614 votes.

Hangkhanlian got a total of 10,246 votes, while National People's Party's Phungzathang Tonsing secured 9,632 votes. North East India Development Party's candidate Paukhansuan Khuptong grabbed the third spot with 6,411 votes. The top three parties got 30.4%, 28.6% and 19.0% respectively.
In Manipur Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Phungzathang Tonsing beat All India Trinamool Congress's P.Songlianlal by 7,751 votes.
