It was a close contest with Naga Peoples Front's Awangbow Newmai winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Z. Kikhonbou Newmai by a margin of just 747 votes.
96.5% of the total votes were casted to top two candidates. Naga Peoples Front's Awangbow Newmai got a total of 15,933 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Z. Kikhonbou Newmai got 15,186 votes. Indian National Congress's candidate G.N. Kumuiteung (DR. AKU) grabbed 1,136 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties secured 49.4%, 47.1% and 3.5% respectively.
In Manipur Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Z.Kikhonbou Newmai defeated Manipur State Congress Party's Awangbow Newmai by 1,398 votes.
