Fashion designer Masaba Gupta’s latest Instagram post shakes off the idea of singular definitions of beauty. On Friday, the designer, who is the daughter of actor Neena Gupta and former West Indies batsman Vivian Richards, took to Instagram to share how whether we realise it or not, the beauty standards set by society (and consistently reinforced via social media) take a toll on us.
Masaba posted the above photograph of her sporting a black leotard on Instagram, along with which she wrote: “I have come to realise that beauty is a different kind of burden as you keep growing. When I was younger, it was more of a longing to be conventional and check all the boxes/fit-in kind of a burden. Now,that I am almost 30... It is more an unapologetic, rebellious kind of a burden. Either way, this whole damn idea of beauty is a burden,” she wrote alongside the image.
The House of Masaba designer said the photograph was taken on a mobile phone and was “completely unedited”.
“This was shot on the sidelines by my wonderful makeup artist Savleen,on the Iphone & completely unedited,” Masaba revealed in the honest post. This she added was “important in the age of severe retouching.”
The realness of Masaba’s recent post isn’t only refreshing, it also challenges the way we see celebrities and our own bodies. Her post — in both its heartfelt and self-deprecating glory — showed how being a “celebrity” no longer means upholding unrealistic ideals of nonstop perfection.
