There are moments in history when nations pause to celebrate what they have achieved. There are equally important moments when they must pause to ask where they are headed.
Independence Day is a day of gratitude for the extraordinary courage and sacrifice that secured our freedom. It is also a day of reflection. Every generation inherits a defining responsibility. The generation of 1947 liberated India from colonial rule. The generations that followed laid the foundations of a modern Republic. Our generation carries a different responsibility: to prepare India for a century that will be shaped by economic strength, technological progress and, most importantly, the values that guide both.
The world today stands at an inflection point. Humanity has achieved extraordinary scientific progress, yet it continues to struggle with some of its most fundamental questions. Global conflicts persist despite unprecedented diplomatic engagement. Climate change has become a shared global reality despite universal recognition of its dangers. Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, cyber technologies and space exploration are redefining the boundaries of possibility, while societies everywhere grapple with questions of ethics, employment, security and human purpose.
The defining challenge before the world is no longer the absence of capability. It is the search for direction. It is precisely at such a moment that India must recognise the uniqueness of its own journey.
Our greatest strength is often described in demographic terms. We are one of the youngest nations in the world. But demographics alone do not build nations. Direction does. The real question before us is whether we are enabling our young people to become creators, researchers, entrepreneurs and nation-builders.
The foundation of India's young mind is built upon family, community and civilisational continuity. It is shaped by values that teach responsibility before entitlement, service before self and duty before privilege. It learns to embrace modernity without abandoning identity.

{{/usCountry}}An Indian student can build an Artificial Intelligence model while remaining deeply connected to the values of home. A young entrepreneur can compete globally while creating opportunities in a village. A young soldier can master the technologies of future warfare while carrying forward a tradition of courage and sacrifice that stretches across generations. Our civilisational ethos has always placed knowledge alongside wisdom, individual achievement alongside collective good and progress alongside responsibility. This balance between innovation and inheritance is one of India's greatest strengths.
As we move towards Viksit Bharat 2047, our task is to bring these strengths together. The Bharat of the future must be AI-enabled, research-driven, innovation-led and globally competitive, while remaining anchored in the civilisational wisdom that has guided this nation for thousands of years. Our knowledge traditions, languages, philosophy, Yoga and Ayurveda are not simply inheritances from the past. They can become important assets for the future.
Technology must ultimately improve the life of the citizen. Artificial Intelligence will find its greatest purpose when it helps a farmer anticipate weather, improves healthcare, makes governance more transparent, strengthens delivery of public services and ensures that benefits reach the person standing at the last mile. India is building significant national capacity in AI and advanced computing, opening new possibilities for our researchers, startups and young innovators to create solutions for Indian languages, agriculture, healthcare and local needs.
Research must similarly move beyond publications and laboratories into patents, products, enterprises and solutions that improve lives. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation offers an important opportunity to deepen collaboration between universities, researchers, industry and society. Our universities must become places where ideas are transformed into innovation and where young Indians are encouraged to solve the problems of tomorrow.
A developed India cannot be built by economic growth alone. It requires integrity in public life, transparency in governance and equal opportunity for every citizen. It also requires the full participation of India's women. Across the country, women are leading transformation through Self Help Groups, entrepreneurship, higher education, scientific research, administration, sports and the Armed Forces. Initiatives such as Lakhpati Didi demonstrate what becomes possible when women are connected with skills, finance, technology and markets. When a woman becomes economically empowered, the impact travels far beyond one household.
India's progress over the last decade demonstrates what becomes possible when aspiration is matched with execution. Young innovators are building globally relevant enterprises. Universities are expanding the frontiers of research. The startup ecosystem is creating new pathways for employment and enterprise. These are signs of a confident nation increasingly prepared to shape the future.
Uttarakhand reflects this larger national transformation in a uniquely inspiring way.
Our State has steadily expanded its identity beyond pilgrimage to encompass innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainable tourism, border-area development and women-led economic growth. Uttarakhand securing the top position in the SDG India Index 2023-24 is an important recognition of the progress being made in sustainable development.
Improved road, rail, air and digital connectivity is bringing opportunities closer to our people. Tourism is expanding into winter tourism, adventure tourism, wellness and new possibilities such as Wed in Uttarakhand. Homestays, organic and natural farming, millet cultivation, honey production, horticulture and aromatic farming are creating new livelihood opportunities while retaining a strong connection with the land and culture of our Himalayan State.
During my visits to our border areas, I have witnessed a growing sense of confidence and possibility. The Vibrant Villages Programme has brought an important change in perspective by recognising our border settlements as the nation's first villages. Better connectivity, tourism, local enterprise and access to markets can help create livelihoods, encourage reverse migration and strengthen these communities. Prosperous and populated border villages are equally important for national security.
Our young people remain Uttarakhand's greatest strength. If opportunities for technology, entrepreneurship, research and enterprise can reach our hills, migration can increasingly become a matter of choice rather than compulsion.
The vision before India is therefore much larger than becoming one of the world's largest economies. Our aspiration must be to become one of the world's most trusted nations, combining technological excellence with moral leadership, economic strength with social harmony and innovation with compassion.
The world is searching for models that reconcile progress with humanity. India's civilisational experience gives us the ability, and the responsibility, to offer such a model.
Freedom acquires its fullest meaning when rights are accompanied by responsibility. As we advance towards the centenary of our Independence, each citizen must ask what he or she can contribute to the India of 2047.
If the hands of our youth are equipped with the technologies of the future, their minds empowered by knowledge and innovation, and their hearts anchored in Indian values, India's possibilities are limitless.
That is the Bharat our freedom fighters dreamt of. That is the Bharat our young people deserve. And that is the Bharat we must now build, together.
