Gurgaon pet ‘eaten’: Suspect says he ate dog meat but not Brownie

The prime suspect in the case of kidnapping, killing and eating of a dog — Brownie — has reportedly confessed to having consumed dog meat. But he claimed he did not eat Brownie’s meat, said sources.

The police detained the suspect, Philip, from his residence in DLF Phase-1’s Sikanderpur area on Wednesday.

The police is questioning Philip, who is named in the FIR filed at DLF Phase-2 police station, about his involvement in the incident. Police said the suspect has not been arrested as the case is still being probed.

A day after the police filed a case of kidnapping, killing and eating Brownie by a group of men, a video circulated in the media shows some locals confronting the suspects in a room.

In one of the videos — which is with the HT — at least 12 people are seen inside a room, eating meat and consuming liquor. One of the suspects is heard saying they “ate doggy”. The videos were shot by anonymous people at an accommodation on Swarna Jayanti Marg in DLF Phase-1’s Sikanderpur area.

President of People for Animals’ Gurgaon chapter, Amit Chaudhery, who lodged a police complaint, said the videos were shot by people living in the vicinity who suspected cooking of dog meat. They entered the suspects’ residence and videotaped them cooking and eating meat, Chaudhery claimed.

“Doggy khayenge to kya hoga? (What will happen if (we) eat dog?)” one of the suspects, who seems inebriated, questions the person shooting the video.

“Doggy khayega? Abhi main bataunga ki kya hoga. Dobara bol kya hoga (I’ll tell you what will happen. Repeat again what will happen)?” the person shooting the video asks.

“Kya hoga? Khaa gaya (What will happen? I ate it),” the man replies.

Police are investigating five videos that show suspects confronting the person recording the video.

The complaint said Brownie was kidnapped by a group of people from DLF Phase-II area around a month ago. The videos were shared with Brownie’s owner Anupama Srivastava, a resident of DLF Phase-2, and later with PFA activists after Srivastava released posters of her missing dog with a reward of ₹5,000. A missing complaint was filed with the police on April 17.

Sudeep Kumar, the station house officer of DLF Phase-II police station, said he has seen the videos but their authenticity is yet to be checked. In the videos, there is a talk of eating some meat but we have to check whether it is dog (meat),” he said.

An FIR under section 379 (theft) and 429 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal), of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under section 11(1) (a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was filed on Tuesday after Chaudhery lodged a complaint.

“We have submitted the videos to the police and they are investigating the matter,” he said.
