In Gurgaon, rumour mills churn out ghost stories after mysterious hair chopping cases

In Monday incident, a 30-year-old woman, Santra, from Bihar who lived in a rented house in Devi Lal Nagar Sector 9 shouted for help around 5.30 am after her braids were cut. She alleged that she heard some noise coming from near the main gate but when she did not open the gate, someone started crying.

This was the second incident reported from the same area. The residents said on Sunday night a similar incident took place with a 60-year-old woman from lane 1. “Mataji went to Jhajjar to her brother’s house on Monday morning as she was scared to stay here,” said Raju, a local.

According to the police, Santra said she tried to ignore the noise but then she spotted a black cat which took the shape of a woman who was carrying scissors and cut her braids.

“She fell unconscious after telling men about what had happened,” said Prakash, a labourer.

Apart from the woman, no one else reportedly saw any cat though the neighbours were awake since 5 am.

“I got up at 5 am and was cleaning the window when I heard Santra shouting. When I went inside her house to check, she said a devil has cut her hair and fled from the room. There were no scissors found in the room nor did I see anyone entering or exiting though I was outside the house facing her main gate at the time of the incident,” said Ranju, a tenant, who is also a friend of the victim.

Police visited the area and appealed the residents to not believe in any rumours or fall prey to supersition. The residents of Old Gurgaon are seeing this incident as an occult practice and are scared to venture out at night.

No police case has been registered so far and the family members have refused to lodge any formal complaint. “No outsider is involved as the gates were locked,” said the police.

Inspector Vijender Singh, station house officer Sector 9, said: “We rushed to the spot when we heard about the news but found nothing. There is no sign of anyone entering the house and the family does not want to report the matter to the police. The woman said she saw a black cat taking a shape of a woman which is hard to believe still we are investigating”.

Earlier, two similar cases were reported at the Sector 5 police station in Gurgaon on Saturday night.
