Deadpool 2 is defeating superhero fatigue, one box office record at a time

In India and the US, Deadpool 2 is fast emerging as the highest earning R-rated film ever in the first weekend.

The wisecracking mercenary knows his audience, it seems. The merc with a mouth has taken the box office by storm with the record set by Avengers: Infinity War looking precarious in North America and the Indians giving it the reception reserved for Bollywood.

The film starring Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouthed superhero is eyeing a Rs 33 crore weekend in India while in the US it is expected to earn $133.5 million. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported, “#Deadpool2 registers a slight decline on Sat [partly due to the Adults tag], but should be back on track today [Sun]… Eyeing 33 cr+ weekend, which is very good for an Adults-rated film... Fri 11.25 cr, Sat 10.65 cr. Total: 21.90 cr NettBOC. India biz... Note: All versions.”

Ranveer Singh has lent his voice for the Hindi version.

In its home ground, Deadpool 2 is set to take the No. 1 box office crown from Infinity War, according to Variety. The third R-rated superhero film from Fox took in $53.3 million Friday, with the Thursday previews bringing in $18.6 million. The film was released in 4,349 theatres, making it Fox’s widest launch ever.

The sequel is also expected to break the first iteration’s record as the highest opening weekend for an R-rated film; Deadpool made $132.4 million two years ago..
