India has been careful about assessing Taliban: Jaishankar

Jaishankar said the UN Security Council’s resolution on Afghanistan represented what views countries across the world held about the Taliban.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday the situation on the ground in Afghanistan is very complicated and among the concerns across the world was whether Afghan soil would be used for terror activities and about the nature of the regime of the Taliban as they recaptured Kabul.

“There is consensus that, however, difficult the politics of the situation, there are real people out there (in Afghanistan) and we have to do something about them,” Jaishankar said during the 19th edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

Speaking with foreign affairs expert Pramit Pal Chaudhuri on the third day of the HTLS 2021, Jaishankar said the UN Security Council’s resolution represented what views countries across the world held.

“At the end of the day the countries who want to make decisions about Afghanistan will make decisions with which they are comfortable with,” he added.

The Taliban wrested control of Afghanistan in August this year and have formed a government, which they want to be recognised by the world.
