    Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Sorensaid that perhaps the BJP could not convince the voters of Ghatsila assembly constituency about its fight for preserving the language, culture, tradition and the very existence of tribal society.

    JMM candidate Somesh Chandra Soren won the by-election to Ghatshila assembly constituency in Jharkhand by a margin of 38,524 votes by defeating BJP's Babulal Soren, son of Champai Soren.

    Champai said, 'Perhaps, this time, we were not successful to make people understand our stand and that's why (result of by-poll in Ghatsila).'

    The by-election for the Budgam Assembly was won by Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday. This is the National Conference's first-ever electoral defeat from the seat, PTI news agency reported.

    Budgam, also known as NC's bastion, voted again in by-elections after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat following his election from his family stronghold of Ganderbal in last year's Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

    The NC had, till now, won every election in which it had fielded a candidate in the Shia-dominated segment.

    By-election 2025 LIVE updates: Ahead of the vote count for various by-elections on Friday, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Sheikh Bashir Ahmad is hopeful of the party's candidate winning the Nagrota assembly by-elections, reported news agency ANI.

    "Umeed ke upar dunia kayam hai. We, too, are very hopeful. The administration's attitude has not been good. I had told them on the first day itself that their system is not good," the JKNC leader told ANI.

    "People are coming in (for counting) whenever they feel like. Bureaucracy will not work. Liquor was caught but no action was taken, complaint was made but no action was taken. People's mandate is in, let's wait," he added.
