Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Congress after its president Rahul Gandhi had said that he wouldn’t be able to look him in the eye over alleged failure to fulfil promises.
Starting with his poor background, Modi accused the Congress of humiliating those who had dared to look them in the eye.
“Who are we to look you in the eye? We don’t have the guts to look you in the eye. I am from a humble family, you are naamdaar (privileged), we are kaamdar (working class),” he said.
The Prime Minister said the Congress was so power-hungry that it had pulled the rug off the feet of any non-Congress government whenever any attempt to form such a government was made.
“It is widely known what happened to those who tried to see eye to eye with you. What happened to Chaudhary Charan Singh, to Chandra Shekhar, Deve Gowda and I K Gujral. What happened to Sharad Pawar and even to Pranab Mukherjee?
“In the past too, those who tried to see eye to eye with you their fate was no different be it Sardar Patel or Subhash Chandra Bose. They were all thrown out, they were humiliated,” he said.

At the end of his speech, Gandhi had walked across to the treasury benches and hugged Modi, surprising him.
Gandhi then returned to his seat amid applause from Congress MPs, and then winked at fellow Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia who was sitting next to him.
Modi targeted Rahul’s wink with gestures, saying, “People have seen what your eyes did today.”
