The CPM suspended its Rajya Sabha parliamentarian Ritabrata Banerjee from the party for three months for his lavish lifestyle.
The decision was taken on Wednesday and the party’s West Bengal committee ratified it on Friday.
The 38-year old MP, recognised as an efficient parliamentarian, is known to be fond of a good life, though his party ideologically encourages an austere lifestyle.
He uploaded a picture on social media this February, sporting a Mont Blanc pen and an Apple smart watch.
The photograph created a stir and a 24-year-old CPM worker sought to know how Banerjee paid for it. The MP allegedly wrote to the company where the supporter worked and the issue became an embarrassment for the party.
The MP was censured by the party’s central and state committees for his behaviour.
Party members could not remember the last CPM leader to be suspended for complaints over living an opulent life.
A committee comprising Lok Sabha MP and politburo member Mohammed Salim, central committee member Madan Ghosh and state secretariat member Mridul De will probe the complaints against Banerjee.
