Parliament monsoon session highlights: ‘Growing stronger together’ another name of GST, says Modi
The monsoon session of Parliament began on Monday. On the first day, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha paid tributes to deceased members and victims of the terror attack in Amarnath. Both houses were later adjourned till Tuesday.
The Opposition is likely to raise the issue of China, Jammu and Kashmir and Darjeeling unrest, impact of Goods and Service Tax (GST) and other issues.
Apart from this, the Centre will also introduce 16 new bills in both the houses of the Parliament for consideration and passing.
Here are highlights of the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament:
11.58 am: Rajya Sabha member and Lalu Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti attends Parliament session, evades questions from the media on corruption charges against her.
11:50 am: “We want the monsoon session to be successful, constructive and fruitful. Whatever issues the Opposition wants to discuss we are ready for it. We had an elaborated discussion on the same in the all-party meeting,” says minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
11:45 am : “The Prime Minister has requested the Opposition to make the Parliament session successful. The government is ready to discuss all the issues. We have asked the Opposition to support us and request them to take part in discussion,” says Union minister Ananth Kumar.
11.40 am : BJP leaders and Union ministers Ananth Kumar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi say they are “hopeful” of conducting the forthcoming session successfully.
11.37 am : “The Prime Minister has all the information about the people indulging in such activities (cow vigilantism). Doesn’t he know the name of the individual and the organisation involved in this illegal activity? He has the Intelligence Bureau, state secretaries briefing him about the situation. He is just repeating his statements,” says Kharge.
11.35 am: Congress leader Kharge says Prime Minister Narendra Modi should act more rather than making statements on cow vigilantism.
11.32 am: “We had a discussion about the issues which will be raised in the Parliament. Today, we will meet again to list it on priority basis. Then we will think about the issue to be raised tomorrow (Tuesday),” says Kharge.
11.30 am: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge says Opposition has listed out the issues to be raised in Parliament.
11.20 am : Rajya Sabha adjourned till Tuesday, July 18.
11.18 am: Rajya Sabha pays tributes to former members and victims of Amarnath attack.
11.16 am: Lok Sabha adjourned till Tuesday, July 18.
11.15 am: Lok Sabha pays tributes to victims of the Amarnath attack.
11.11 am: Lok Sabha pays tributes to deceased members, including BJP’s Vinod Khanna.
11.10 am: National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah takes oath as new member of the Lok Sabha.
10.40 am: Leaders from opposition parties including Sharad Yadav, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Farooq Abdullah, D Raja, Kanimozhi meet in Parliament for a discussion ahead of the monsoon session.
10.10 am: “This session will see the election of the new President and vice president. It will also see the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on August 9,” says PM Modi.
10.04 am: “Just like rains make soil emit a pleasant smell, similarly, the successful implementation of the GST has filled the session with a new hope and excitement,” says PM Modi on monsoon session.
10.02 am: “I believe that all the parties, all the MPs, will take important decisions in the national interest by discussion and intention of value addition,” says Modi.
10 am: PM Narendra Modi says he hopes all parties would discuss and take decisions in national interest.
