A 34-year-old man died after a human pyramid collapsed while a Govinda troupe was attempting to form layers to break a Dahi Handi during a Janmashtami event in Navi Mumbai’s Ghansoli on Saturday evening, police said.

The incident reportedly took place around 8.30pm during a Dahi Handi programme organised by the Devidas Chaugule Dahi Handi Mandal. According to the police, a Govinda troupe from Ghansoli was in the process of forming a human pyramid when the structure suddenly collapsed.

The deceased has been identified as Swapnil Sadanand Nawar, a resident of Koliwada in Ghansoli village. He sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.

However, doctors declared Nawar dead, police said.

Following the incident, an accidental death report (ADR) was registered at Rabale police station. Police are conducting further inquiries to ascertain the circumstances leading to the collapse and the death.
