Eminent historian Basudev Chatterji, also the former chairman of Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) passed away on Thursday in Guwahati in Assam.

Chatterji was an academician, and he used to teach at St Stephen’s College in Delhi and University of Hyderabad besides supervising undergraduates at the University of Cambridge.

He had also proposed for documenting histories both archival as well as non-archival materials such as church records, private letters of the Second World War period, oral histories, folktales and folk songs.

The books ‘Trade, Tariffs and Empire : Lancashire and British Policy in India’, and ‘Dictionary of Martyrs India’s Freedom Struggle’ were among his works.
