The Lok Sabha's ethics committee had recommended Mahua Moitra's expulsion after it found her guilty of sharing her parliamentary logins with businessman Darshan Hiranandani.

The report was presented in the House around 12 noon. Following an adjournment, as soon as the House reconvened at 2 pm, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to discuss the panel report.

Lok Sabha, with majority votes, expelled TMC MP as it adopted the ethics panel report and recommendation.

On Thursday, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Mentioning that India continues to maintain the momentum of the fastest-growing major economy, with all sectors contributing significantly to economic activities, the finance minister said, "The second quarter growth was very high, it is the highest in the world. The Lok Sabha, on the other hand, passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

The winter session is effectively the last window for the Narendra Modi-led central government to clear legislation before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The session which began on Monday, will be conducted in 15 sittings till December 22.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha member from Punjab Dr Sandeep Pathak on Thursday raised the issue of stubble burning, in the Parliament and made an appeal to the Centre to cooperate with the Punjab government for a solution.

Pathak said farmers are blamed for burning crop residue, whereas some farmers burn stubble not out of hobby but out of compulsion. “Governments are clearly responsible for this. Winter Session LIVE: Electricity demand grows 8.5 pc in Apr-Oct; supply rises 8.8 pc, says minister RK Singh

The electricity demand increased 8.5 per cent to 9,82,233 units during April-October 2023, Parliament was informed on Thursday.

The energy requirement was 9,05,443 units during the first seven months of 2022, Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy RK Singh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The energy supply rose 8.8 per cent to 9,79,344 units during the period under review from 8,99,950 units in the year-ago period.

In FY 2022-23, the electricity requirement was 9.6 per cent higher at 15,11,847 units over 13,79,812 units in FY 2021-22.

The Union government on Thursday said 403 Indian students have died abroad since 2018 due to various reasons, including natural causes, accidents and medical conditions, with Canada accounting for the highest 91 fatalities among 34 nations.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said that according to the information available with the ministry, 403 incidents of death of Indian students abroad have been reported since 2018.

Winter Session LIVE: Lok Sabha passes bill for setting up central tribal university in Telangana

A Bill seeking to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The bill was passed after a reply to the debate by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The bill amends Central Universities Act, 2009 and the new university will be called Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University. It will be set up in Mulugu district in Telangana.

Winter Session LIVE: Percentage of female candidates recommended for Civil Services Exam increased over the last 5 years, government says

The percentage of female candidates recommended for appointment in the Civil Services Examination (CSE) has increased over male candidates, the government told the Parliament on Thursday.

In a written reply to a series of queries on candidates in the CSE merit list, by Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi, Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions of India Dr. Jitendra Singh furnished the details on candidates’ gender distribution, educational stream, language spoken, and the opted degrees.

The gender-wise data show that the percentage of male candidates recommended for appointment in the CSE decreased from 75.95 per cent in 2017 to 73.13 per cent in 2021. Meanwhile, the percentage of female candidates recommended increased from 24.05 per cent in 2017 to 26.87 per cent in 2021.

The data also showed that the highest proportion of candidates in the CSE was in engineering, followed by humanities and science. In 2021, out of the 748 candidates, 452 were from engineering, 188 from humanities, 64 from science, and 44 from medical sciences, the data said.

Only four states in India— Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam — have adopted the model tenancy law more than two years after the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) sent recommendations for the same, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Answering a starred question by MP Vasava Parbhubhai Nagarbhai from Bardoli, minister Surat Hardeep Singh Puri said that the ministry had prepared a Model Tenancy Act (MTA), and the same was approved by the union cabinet. Following this, he said the same was sent to all the states and union territories on June 7, 2021.
