Two newborn girls were found abandoned inside the toilet of a railway station in Bolangir district of western Odisha Sunday morning, police said. A passenger found the babies, reportedly twins and believed to be one month olds, bundled in a polythene bag around 6am.
Railway officials informed the Childline NGO, which rescued the newborns. The babies were admitted to the Bolangir Medical College and Hospital where doctors later said that the condition of both the girls was stable.
The police were yet to find out about the kids’ parents or who left the babies inside the toilet. “When I entered the toilet I saw the babies in a plastic bag,” said Kapileshwar, the passenger who first spotted the newborns.
Sub-inspector DC Pradhan of Bolangir railway police said they have started the investigation. “We are trying to find out who left the two kids there. We have got some leads in this regard.”
Odisha has witnessed several similar incidents reported in the past. About two weeks ago, two aborted female foetuses wrapped in a polythene bag were found dumped in Berhampur town in Ganjam district. Last month, a newborn girl buried neck deep in a field with her face covered by leaves was rescued in a critical condition in Sundargarh district.
In January this year, a newborn girl was found abandoned near a drain in Angul district while another newborn was found near a borewell of a veterinary hospital of Nayagarh district, which shot into infamy 11 years ago, when some 30 female foetuses were recovered from a well near a private health clinic.
